As a mom who’s wandered around the Big Apple with two kids in tow (and we mostly walked the city!), I know first-hand how important it is to find the right spot to rest your head and have some comfort away from home. So, here’s a guide to where to stay in New York with kids with the best family-friendly neighbourhoods and hotels in New York City, filled with charm, convenience and a welcome haven at the end of each busy day.

Best Neighbourhoods in NYC for Families

Upper West Side

This leafy, residential area is a dream for families. With Central Park just a short stroll away, you’ve got space to run around, playgrounds galore, and easy access to the American Museum of Natural History. It feels worlds away from the city's hustle, yet it’s still close to everything.

Midtown Manhattan

If it’s your first time in NYC and you want to be in the middle of the magic, Midtown is the place to be. With Times Square, Bryant Park, and Rockefeller Center all nearby, there’s always something exciting happening. Many hotels here offer spacious family rooms too, keeping you close to the hustle and bustle in the city that never sleeps (but hopefully you will, peacefully!).

Battery Park / Financial District

It might surprise you, but Downtown NYC is a peaceful place to stay with kids. It’s quieter in the evenings and has stunning views of the Statue of Liberty. The ferry to Liberty Island is nearby, and there are plenty of parks and waterside walks that are lovely to enjoy with the kids in tow at the end of a busy day of exploring what the city has to offer.

Brooklyn (DUMBO & Park Slope)

For a slower-paced stay, head across the bridge to Brooklyn. DUMBO offers picture-perfect views and family-friendly restaurants, while Park Slope boasts charming brownstones and access to Prospect Park — like a quieter Central Park.

Helpful Tips for Booking Family Stays in NYC

Consider renting instead of overpacking – Homey Rentals can deliver strollers, car seats, high chairs, bassinets, baby swings, and even milk warmers directly to your hotel, saving you the hassle of traveling with bulky gear and making your stay feel more like home.

Check the room layout – Some "family rooms" are just standard rooms with two beds.

Look for kitchenettes or in-room fridges – Makes life so much easier with young kids.

Choose a hotel near the subway – It makes getting around with tired feet a breeze.

Read family reviews – They’re gold for spotting helpful insights like quiet rooms or stroller-friendly entrances.

New York City is a magical playground for children, with so much to see and do each day, and with the right base, it’s a joy to explore.
