Design Ideas For the Perfect Family Living Room

The living room is the hub of the house, the place where everyone relaxes together and the room where the most time is spent.

As a family with two young boys, our living room needs to be quite functional, as not only is it a space where we watch TV and relax, but it’s also a room that the boys like to play in a lot and that makes for lots of toys and mess!

Today I'm sharing some ways in which you can make your living room look super stylish and personal to your family, while also keeping it functional so that every member of the family can enjoy it.

1. Display your pictures
Everyone knows that snapping pictures is my thing, but displaying them is something I love to do too. There's nothing lovelier than looking around a room and seeing all your lovely memories together on display.

If you have sideboards, you can display your pictures in beautiful standing frames, or, if you prefer, you can make a feature wall of prints in all different sizes to really have a focus point in the room. If you prefer a modern decor look then black and white photography is a perfect thing to display, or, if you're like me and prefer vibrant colour, having pops of colour through your pictures will give a happy, bright and vibrant vibe to your living room.

2. Add some fun elements
Your home should feature things you love and sometimes that means that some items in your home won't fit into the 'traditional decor', but will add a lot of fun and will make you smile when you see them.

These fun elements could consist of a piece of art or a sculpture that you really love, small water features, cuckoo clocks and so much more. We have a cuckoo clock in our living room and it makes for a really fun piece in the room. We love hearing the cuckoo tell us what time it is and the kids are always in awe of it. Remember, a house is also a home, so as well as being stylish, it should also be to your own personal tastes and a fun place to enjoy and live in.

3. Make the couch your focus
The whole point of a living room is to relax, and as a family, the couch is the main centre of this.
You can really make the couch the focus of your room by layering it with throws and comfy cushions. These soft furnishings are all perfect for making the space cosy and perfect for snuggling up on. You can mix patterns and colours to really make it interesting too.

4. Shelve it
Whether it be a little shelf above the couch to display some trinkets or built-in shelves to display hoards of books, shelving is a great feature to have in a living room. Not only do they make for extra storage — much needed in a house with young children — but they're also a great design statement.

It’s lovely to look around a living room and see people's treasured possessions on display and you can even tie these into the decor such as colour-themed books, etc. if you're looking for a quirky and fun touch for your living room.

5. Make it family-friendly
The most important thing for a family living room is to make it family-friendly! Yes, you can have your much longed for white couch in a living room with young children, but it's best to choose it in a more durable fabric such as leather, which can be wiped clean.

Furniture such as plastic chairs (the stylish kind) and lacquered tables are great choices as they can also be wiped down. I guess the whole family-friendly thing is that if it can be wiped down or washed then it's acceptable!

Storage is a must in a family living room. Built-in cupboards work really well and are great for hiding all the toys away once the children are finished playing.

Hopefully, this post has given you some inspiration for the design of your own family living room.
