Being a mum means your days are often a blur of school runs, supermarket dashes, toddler-chasing and the rare (but golden!) moment of calm with a cup of tea. It’s a beautiful kind of busy – but one that calls for clothes that are both practical and pretty. As someone who’s always loved fashion, even during those chaotic newborn days and rainy school drop-offs, I truly believe you don’t have to sacrifice style for comfort. In fact, the two can go hand in hand when you know what to look for.
Comfortable and stylish clothing has become such a welcome focus in recent years, and thankfully, the high street and online shops are filled with mum-friendly fashion pieces that tick every box. I'm also a huge fan of a great charity shop or Vinted bargain. I love shopping pre-loved and saving some cash while still getting something great for mine or the kids wardrobes.
Whether you’re running after a little one in the park, heading out on a family day trip or simply doing the daily juggle at home, there are so many beautiful, wearable options that feel good and look even better.

One wardrobe essential I reach for again and again are ladies elasticated waist trousers. In fact, I'm wearing them today as I type this post! Gone are the days when these were reserved for gym wear or maternity bottoms – they’ve had such a chic makeover. Think soft fabrics, tapered legs, subtle prints and flattering high-waisted styles that sit just right. Elasticated waist trousers are my go-to for everything from school runs to impromptu meet-ups with friends, and they pair so easily with a tucked-in t-shirt or a cosy knit once the weather turns colder. They offer freedom of movement, which is a must when you’ve got little ones to wrangle and they still give you that pulled-together look we all love.
Another staple in my mum-uniform is a good-quality oversized shirt or blouse. There’s something effortlessly stylish about an oversized button-down and it’s the perfect piece for layering too. Wear it open over a vest on warmer days or buttoned-up with a chunky cardigan when the chillier weather sets in. Linen blends are lovely for warmer months, while soft flannel or brushed cottons are perfect for autumn and winter. Bonus points for the fact that they hide any food smears or toddler handprints until you can get changed!

When it comes to dresses, midi styles in breathable fabrics are the ultimate in easy dressing. A smock or tea dress can be thrown on in seconds but makes you feel instantly dressed up, even when you’re just popping to the shops. Look for dresses with pockets (I always need pockets because I'm not a fan of carrying a handbag, I have enough to carry with my toddler!) and with loose, flowy fits that feel light on the body while still giving you shape. Pair them with runners for practicality (clean, crisp white runners are my go to) or boots in the cooler months. Both of these options are just as comfy and mum-life friendly.
Footwear also plays a big part in mum-style. I’m always drawn to pretty but practical shoes, think slip-on trainers, soft leather boots with chunky soles, or even waterproof ankle boots for puddle-jumping with the kids. Comfort is key, but it’s lovely to find those little details such as scalloped edges, pastel hues, or gold hardware, that can add a little something extra to your footwear.
Ultimately, dressing as a mum doesn’t mean giving up your sense of style, although I'm sure we all went through a phase of that when we were in the trenches with little ones! It’s about embracing clothes that move with you, support your day and make you feel like yourself, even in the midst of a busy, sometimes messy, always beautiful life. I always say that if something makes you feel lovely, it’s worth wearing, no matter what’s on your agenda. Because stylish doesn’t have to mean stiff or impractical and comfy doesn’t have to mean boring.
If you’re looking for some of my favourite places to shop mum-friendly fashion, H&M, Next and Joanie Clothing always have a great mix of wearable styles with gorgeous patterns and flattering cuts. As I said earlier, Vinted has become a bit of an obsession of mine and if you're also a bargain hunter, you can often find nearly-new pieces perfect for mum-life at a fraction of the price.
So here’s to finding joy in the everyday outfits, and celebrating the style that suits this wonderful, whirlwind season of motherhood. Whether you’re in elasticated waist trousers or a floaty floral dress, you deserve to feel comfortable and confident in your clothes.
