What To Pack For A Trip To Ireland: The Ultimate Guide

Make sure to read to the end of this post to download a free, helpful checklist on What To Pack For A Trip To Ireland, to make sure you don't forget anything while you're packing!

There’s something truly magical about Ireland — it's blessed with the beauty of vibrant green fields, rugged coastlines, fairytale villages, and some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet. As someone who adores and who is lucky enough to live in this beautiful land, I thought it would be helpful to share a guide on what to pack for a trip to Ireland, whether you’re planning a countryside escape, city break, or a road trip along the Wild Atlantic Way.

Ireland is known for its ever-changing weather (yes — we do often get four seasons in one day!), so packing smartly is key. With the right clothes, accessories, and essentials in your bag, you’ll be ready to explore this beautiful country in comfort and style.

Things To Keep In Mind Before Packing

Layers are your best friend: The weather can shift quickly — you might start your morning with bright sunshine and find yourself caught in a gentle mist or breeze by lunchtime, so make sure to layer up and add/remove a layer whenever you need to.

Comfort over glamour: While Irish towns and cities have their trendy spots, this is a place where practical, comfy clothes and waterproofs are appreciated. You won't need many high-heels if you're wanting to explore the true beauty of Ireland!

Leave space in your bag: Trust me, you’ll want to pick up a few souvenirs — think handmade Aran knits, local treats such as Irish chocolate, sweets, etc, and beautiful Irish pottery.

What To Pack For A Trip To Ireland

Clothing

Waterproof Jacket: Absolutely essential. A lightweight, breathable one with a hood is perfect for sudden showers.

Warm Layers: Think cosy jumpers, fleeces, and cardigans. Irish weather can be chilly even in summer.

Comfortable Walking Shoes: With cobbled streets, country paths, and beach strolls to consider, good waterproof walking shoes or boots are a must.

Casual Daywear: T-shirts, long sleeve tops, jeans, and leggings are ideal for exploring Ireland.

Smart Casual Outfit: For a nice dinner out, afternoon tea in an Irish hotel or castle or a traditional Irish pub evening with live music.

Hat, Scarf, and Gloves: Especially if you’re visiting from autumn to spring.

Socks (and extra pairs!): Nothing beats dry, warm socks after a walk in the rain.

Accessories

Compact Umbrella: Handy for those passing showers.

Day Backpack: Perfect for carrying snacks, a camera, and an extra layer.

Sunglasses: Yes — we do get sunshine! Plus, they’re great for driving in changing light.

Reusable Water Bottle: Irish tap water is clean and safe to drink, so make the most of it during your visit by bringing a reusable bottle and saving yourself some money rather than buying drinks in shops.

Plug Adapter: Ireland uses the Type G plug, like the UK.

Toiletries & Essentials

Moisturiser & Lip Balm: The fresh Atlantic air can be drying on the skin and lips, so make sure to pop some of these in your bag.

Sunscreen: Even on cloudy days, UV rays can be strong.

Medications: Bring any personal medications you need, plus motion sickness tablets if you’ll be on winding country roads or ferries. In my experience, you'll have to drive on the windiest roads to get to the most beautiful hidden gems in Ireland.

Travel Insurance Documents: Always handy to have.

Tech & Extras

Phone & Charger: A power bank is great for keeping your phone topped up during long days out.

Camera: The scenery is too beautiful not to capture. If you're a drone user, bringing your drone to Ireland is a great idea as it will allow you to capture the stunning scenery from all angles.

Travel Guidebook or Offline Maps App: Mobile signal can be patchy in rural spots and you don't want to get stuck in an unfamiliar place!

Optional But Lovely To Have on Your Trip to Ireland

Travel Journal: For jotting down memories, thoughts, and the names of that amazing B&B or café that you never want to forget.

Binoculars: For birdwatching or whale watching along the coast in summer or spotting seals and other wildlife on boat trips.

Local Phrasebook or Gaelic Words List: While everyone speaks English, you’ll spot lovely Irish words on signs, and a “sláinte!” at the pub is always welcome.

Ireland is a country that surprises you in the best ways — from a rainbow breaking out over a sun-drenched field to the warmth of a friendly stranger’s greeting in a quiet village. Packing well means you’ll be ready to enjoy every moment, rain or shine.

I hope this little guide helps you feel more prepared and excited for your Irish adventure. If you’ve been to Ireland before, I’d love to hear what your must-pack items are too — pop them in the comments!
