Affordable Family Christmas Traditions to Start This Year

Christmas is one of the most special times of year for families. It's a time of togetherness and excitement as parents plan lovely surprises for the kids and the kids wait in excited anticipation for the arrival of Santa and gifts they've been longing for. As the years go by and my boys grow older, I find myself cherishing the little things most of all and the family Christmas traditions we've began and enjoyed over the years.

You don’t need to spend a fortune to create Christmas magic that your family will always remember. Some of the loveliest traditions are the ones that cost very little but fill your hearts with joy. If you’re looking to make this Christmas feel extra special, without breaking the ban, here are some affordable family Christmas traditions to start this year.

1. A Family Christmas Eve Box

One of my favourite traditions is putting together a little Christmas Eve box for the kids. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just a few small treats to add to the magic of Christmas Eve (one of my favourite days of the year). I like to include:

A pair of festive-themed pyjamas

A small packet of hot chocolate and mini marshmallows

Christmas-themed books

You can use a wooden box, a gift bag, or even a wrapped shoebox, it’s the thought and excitement that matter most. For more inspiration on what to include in a Christmas Eve box, check out my Christmas Eve Box Checklist (with free printable!).

2. Candlelight Dinner or Picnic by the Tree

When the house is all twinkling lights and the Christmas tree is glowing softly, why not have a special candlelight dinner or a little indoor picnic by the tree?
Light some candles, play soft carols in the background and enjoy something simple like soup and crusty bread or, if you don't fancy cooking, order in a takeaway and enjoy it in front of the tree. It’s such a lovely way to slow down and savour the calm before the big day.

3. Handmade Decorations Together

There’s such beauty in decorations made by little hands. Spend an afternoon making salt dough ornaments, paper snowflakes or stringing popcorn garlands for the tree. Not only does it keep the children busy on dark winter days, but you’ll build a collection of sentimental keepsakes to bring out year after year.

Tip: Save the children’s drawings from school and cut small stars or hearts from them to turn into DIY gift tags, adding a sweet personal touch for wrapped presents.

4. A Christmas Story Night

Choose one night each week in December for a special storytime by the tree. Gather with blankets and hot chocolate, turn off the lights, and read a festive book together.
Our family loves Lucy and Tom's Christmas and The Night Before Christmas, but even reading old favourites with a bit of sparkle in the air makes bedtime magical. You could create a book advent calendar, wrapping up a festive themed book for the kids to unwrap and read each night in the lead up to Christmas Day.

5. Giving Back Together

One of the most meaningful traditions you can create is showing your children the joy of giving.
You could donate toys they’ve outgrown, bake cookies for family and friends, or put together a small care package for a local charity.
Even the smallest act of kindness teaches children that Christmas isn’t just about receiving, it’s true meaning is about love, generosity and community.

6. Winter Walks and Hot Chocolate Stops

Bundle everyone up and take a walk to see the Christmas lights around your neighbourhood or local town. Bring a flask of hot chocolate and enjoy the crisp air, the sparkle of fairy lights and the sense of togetherness that only this season brings.

7. A Visit from the Christmas Elf (or Gnome!)

If you’ve little ones at home, a Christmas elf or gnome can bring so much excitement to December mornings. Keep it simple, a few fun hiding spots or kind “elf messages” are more than enough. It doesn’t need to be elaborate; the magic is in the surprise.

8. The “Thankful Jar”

Throughout December, invite everyone in the family to write down something they’re grateful for each day and pop it in a jar. On Christmas morning, read them together.
It’s such a heart-warming way to reflect on the season and all the little blessings of the year gone by.

9. Decorate a Woodland Christmas Tree

This is a family tradition we began when our eldest son was a baby. Every year we decorate a little Christmas tree in the woods and take family photos next to it. We remember to take the decorations away afterwards, so as not to harm any wildlife, but we love this tradition and look forward to it every year.

10. Create a Yearly Christmas Photo

Start a simple tradition of taking a family photo in front of the tree every Christmas. You’ll treasure looking back on how much everyone has grown, and it’s such a lovely way to capture your family’s story through the years.

Christmas doesn’t have to be extravagant to be beautiful. The most precious moments often come from the simplest traditions, the laughter over hot chocolate moustaches, the handmade ornaments that hang a little crooked, the glow of fairy lights reflecting in little eyes.

This year, focus on what truly matters: love, connection, and the joy of making memories together.
