Christmas Eve is truly one of the most magical days of the year (if not the most magical!). The excitement in the air of little ones eagerly awaiting the arrival of Santa, the soft glow of fairy lights, the smell of something delicious baking in the kitchen and those precious, quiet moments just before the chaos of Christmas Day begins.
In our home, one of our most loved traditions is putting together Christmas Eve boxes for the children. It’s such a lovely way to make the night before Christmas even more special, and highlighting the importance of Christmas Eve (my children are half Polish and the Polish tradition is to celebrate Christmas Eve) helping little ones wind down from the excitement while building the anticipation for what’s to come.

What Is a Christmas Eve Box?
A Christmas Eve box is a small gift box given to children (or even the whole family!) on Christmas Eve. It’s filled with a few thoughtful treats and activities to enjoy before bedtime: think cosy pyjamas, hot chocolate, a Christmas storybook and maybe a little treat from Santa’s elves.
You don’t need to spend much at all to make it magical, most of the joy comes from the excitement and tradition.
You can use a simple gift box, a wooden crate or even a decorated shoebox if you're on a budget. Add some festive tissue paper, tie it with a ribbon, and you’ve got yourself something special that your children will remember every Christmas Eve.
What to Put in a Christmas Eve Box
Here are some of my favourite ideas for filling your Christmas Eve box, a mix of affordable, cosy and magical items that children adore.
1. Christmas Pyjamas
There’s nothing better than slipping into fresh, festive pyjamas on Christmas Eve! Look out for soft cotton ones with cute patterns like reindeer or snowflakes. Next, Marks & Spencer and Penneys always have great affordable options.
2. A Christmas Storybook
Reading together before bed is such a lovely way to slow down and make memories. The Night Before Christmas, The Snowman or Father Christmas Needs a Wee are perfect choices for younger children, but there are countless Christmas books to choose from! Check your local charity shop or Vinted for great condition books at bargain prices.
3. Hot Chocolate & Marshmallows
Add a little packet of hot chocolate and a few marshmallows or even a festive mug. It’s the cosiest little treat for the evening.
4. A Christmas Movie or Family Film Night Ticket
Pop in a DVD or a printed ‘Christmas Movie Night’ ticket for a fun family activity. Pair it with popcorn and fairy lights for a magical evening at home.
5. Reindeer Food
A small bag of oats and glitter (or edible sprinkles) makes wonderful reindeer food for sprinkling outside before bed.
6. Santa’s Magic Key
If you don’t have a chimney, a “magic key” is a beautiful addition and it lets Santa come in to deliver presents!
7. A Small Sweet Treat or Snack
Something simple like a candy cane, gingerbread man or Christmas cookie adds a little sparkle to the box.
8. Letter from Santa or the Elves
A personal touch that children adore, a short note from Santa wishing them a good night before his big visit.
