Tips on Getting Ready for College

The final weeks of summer before you leave for college are a unique mix of excitement and anticipation. While you are probably busy saying goodbye to friends and enjoying your last few home-cooked meals, a new reality is setting in.

The transition of moving to college involves more than just packing boxes; it's about setting yourself up for a smooth and successful start. Thoughtful preparation now can prevent major headaches later, allowing you to focus on classes, new friends, and the incredible experiences ahead.

Secure the Right ID for Fall Travel

If you plan to fly home for Thanksgiving or spring break, you will need a federally compliant ID.

Since the implementation of the REAL ID Act, standard driver's licenses from some states may not be sufficient for domestic air travel. Before you get bogged down with coursework, check your state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website to see if your current ID is compliant.

If it is not, the process to get a new one can take several weeks, involving specific documentation like a birth certificate and proof of residency. Start the process for obtaining a compliant ID well before your first break.

Dorm Life 101: Essentials to Pack and Share

Your dorm room will be your new home base, but it comes with limited space. Before you buy a mini-fridge, a microwave, and a large area rug, you should connect with your assigned roommate. You can save money and avoid cramming two of every large item into a tiny room if you divide and conquer. One of you can bring the fridge, while the other brings the microwave.

Beyond the big items, pack things that will make the space feel like your own, such as photos and your favourite bedding, but wait to buy most decorations until you see the room yourself. Coordinate with your future roommate on who will bring the larger shared items.

Tech-Ready: Organise, Backup, and Secure Your Files

You will generate a massive number of digital files in college, so establishing an organisation system from day one is critical.

Before classes even start, create a main folder for the semester, with subfolders for each course. A consistent naming convention for your files will save you from frantic searching later.

Most importantly, protect your hard work from computer crashes or theft. Store class notes, essays, and residency paperwork not only on your laptop but also on a cloud storage system to ensure easy access even if your device fails.

Plan Your Campus Move Strategically

Move-in day can be a hectic experience for students and their families. To make it less stressful, look up your university’s move-in schedule and traffic patterns online beforehand. Many schools assign specific arrival times or direct traffic to certain unloading zones to manage the crowds.

When you load your vehicle, think in reverse order of what you will need. Pack a 'first night' box with all your immediate essentials - bedding, a towel, toiletries, a portable power bank for charging your phone, and a change of clothes - and make sure it is the last thing you put in the car so it is the first thing you can take out.
