If there’s one thing I’ve learned while living and raising my family here in beautiful Cork, it’s that the real magic often lies off the beaten path. Beyond the popular sights and picture-perfect tourist trails, our county is brimming with secret spots that many visitors—and even some locals!—have yet to discover.
Whether you're looking for peaceful nature walks, whimsical gardens, or quiet coastal corners, these hidden gems in Cork are perfect for families, couples, solo explorers and anyone who loves discovering something new. Here are 10 of my favourite lesser-known places in Cork you simply have to visit.

1. Glanworth Abbey and Castle
Nestled in the tiny village of Glanworth, this quiet medieval ruin feels like stepping back in time. The 13th-century castle and Dominican friary are almost always deserted, giving you space to roam and let the kids’ imaginations run wild. The castle is free to explore and you can wander around at your own pace. Glanworth is also home to the narrowest and oldest public bridge in everyday use in Europe.
Family tip: Pack a picnic to enjoy by the River Funshion nearby.

2. Ballyannan Wood, Midleton
This magical woodland is just a few minutes from bustling Midleton, yet you’ll feel a world away. Carpeted in bluebells in spring and golden leaves come autumn, it’s perfect for a tranquil stroll with little ones in tow. We visit here often in spring for the sea of bluebells and even had our annual Easter egg hunt in the bluebells one year.
Family tip: Spot fairy doors along the way and keep an eye out for swans on the estuary.

3. Ballard Waterfall Trail, Just Outside Fermoy
A real hidden treasure, this lovely woodland trail will lead you down to a gorgeous waterfall, where you can sit, admire and listen to the sounds of nature to your hearts content. Make sure you bring non-slip shoes for the walk down and a carrier if you babies/toddlers with you.
Family tip: Pack a picnic and enjoy it by the waterfall.
4. Fountainstown Beach’s Cliff Walk
Most people head to the main beach, but just a short walk away lies a secret cliff path with beautiful views over Ringabella Creek. It’s quiet, raw, and absolutely beautiful.
Family tip: Best for older kids as parts of the path can be uneven—sturdy shoes are a must.

5. Mullinghassig Waterfall
Hidden at the end of a beautiful wood is the stunning Mullinhassig Waterfall. Follow the woodland trail down and along the water until you reach this gorgeous waterfall, with a pool at the end, that makes for the most stunning spot to spend some time with the family.
Family tip: Back a picnic and a flask of tea/coffee to enjoy on the wooden bench near the waterfall. It's the perfect scenic spot to sit and enjoy something tasty while surrounded by nature.
6. Currabinny Woods
A favourite of ours for a peaceful Sunday morning, Currabinny offers an easy-to-navigate looped walk under a canopy of trees, with views of Cork Harbour peeking through the branches.
Family tip: There’s a tiny fairy trail and a perfect picnic bench halfway through the loop.

7. Inchydoney Blowhole
Not far from the popular Inchydoney Beach lies a secret coastal wonder—a dramatic blowhole carved into the cliffs. It’s incredible to witness during high tide or stormy weather.
Safety note: Supervise children closely and avoid getting too close to the edge.

8. Doneraile Court & Gardens (Quiet Entrance)
Doneraile is becoming more well-known, but most people enter via the main gates. For a truly serene experience, try the lesser-used side entrance near the old gatehouse—it’s like stepping into a secret garden. You can also take the long walk around the estate for stunning views of Doneraile House and the surrounding grounds.
9. Clogheenmilcon Fen, Blarney
A stunning natural fen teeming with birdlife, wildflowers and water channels—it’s often missed by those heading to Blarney Castle but is a quiet sanctuary for nature lovers.
10. The Grotto at Mount Melleray, Near Kilworth
A peaceful pilgrimage site tucked in the hills, this grotto is surrounded by forest paths, wildflowers and silence. A perfect spot for quiet contemplation and reconnecting with nature.
