The Best Rainy Day Activities in Cork for Kids

Let’s be honest—Cork’s weather isn’t always sunshine and blue skies, even if it's supposed to be sunnier in the south. But that doesn’t mean fun has to stop when the rain rolls in. As a mum of three boys who thrive on adventure, I’ve learned to embrace those rainy days and turn them into great days for us, filled with play, curiosity and adventure.

Whether you’re visiting Cork with your family or you’re a local looking for inspiration on what to do when the heavens open, here are some of the best rainy day activities in Cork for kids—all tried and tested by my own little explorers.

1. The Planet Entertainment Centre, Blackpool

When cabin fever sets in, The Planet in Blackpool is our go-to spot. With bowling, arcade games, and a massive soft play area, it’s the perfect place for burning off energy. The soft play is ideal for little ones, while older kids will love racing on the arcade simulators. It’s clean, colourful and always buzzing—just what you need to lift spirits on a grey day.

2. Cork City Library – Grand Parade

Libraries aren’t just for quiet reading anymore. Cork City Library has a fantastic children’s section with cosy reading corners, fun storytelling events, and even activity packs for creative little minds. We’ve spent countless rainy afternoons tucked away in there with a pile of picture books and a sense of calm you just can’t replicate at home.

3. The Lifetime Lab at Old Cork Waterworks

This hidden gem offers hands-on science exhibits and interactive displays designed to spark curiosity in children (and grown-ups too!). There’s something truly exciting about watching your child learn through play—especially when they’re pushing buttons, spinning wheels, and discovering how things work.

Indoor areas keep everyone dry, and the staff are always warm and welcoming.

4. Leahys Open Farm Indoor Play Barn (Dungourney)

If you’re happy to venture a little outside the city, Leahys Open Farm is an absolute favourite of ours. While the farm animals and outdoor activities shine on sunny days, the indoor play barn is fantastic during the rain. It’s full of slides, climbing frames, and ride-on toys—and there’s even a lovely tearoom for parents to enjoy a cuppa while the kids play.

5. Perks Entertainment Centre, Youghal

For a good old-fashioned family fun day, Perks in Youghal is absolutely brilliant. It’s one of the largest indoor funfairs in Ireland, with everything from bumper cars and bowling to arcade games and kiddie rides. There’s even a soft play area for younger children. It’s colourful, loud, and totally thrilling—perfect for a rainy afternoon when everyone needs cheering up.

6. Cork City Gaol

This one might surprise you, but Cork City Gaol is a firm favourite in our house for rainy days—and not just for older children. It’s an absolutely fascinating step back in time, where kids can walk through the atmospheric old prison wings, peek into recreated cells, and hear stories of what life was like behind bars over a century ago.

The wax figures and sound effects bring everything to life in a way that’s both educational and engaging. My eldest especially loved hearing about the escape attempts and how prisoners lived day-to-day. It’s a fantastic way to spark curiosity about history and storytelling, all while staying dry indoors.

7. Mahon Point Cinema & Play Zone

For a bit of screen time on a big screen, Mahon Point Omniplex is ideal. They often run special family-friendly showings and “Sensory Screenings” for younger children. Add a stop to the indoor Jungle World Play Zone afterwards and you’ve got an easy rainy afternoon all wrapped up.
