There’s something truly magical about a castle. Maybe it’s the winding stone staircases, the fairytale towers, or the ancient secrets hidden behind centuries-old doors. For children (and us grown-ups who never really stopped dreaming), exploring a castle is like stepping into a storybook.
Ireland is dotted with incredible castles – some still standing tall, others in romantic ruins – and many of them are perfect for family visits. From dress-up days to dragon tales, here are 10 enchanting Irish castles that you need to visit.

1. Bunratty Castle & Folk Park, Co. Clare
Best for: A full medieval village experience.
Bunratty is so much more than a castle – it’s a full day of adventure. The castle itself is beautifully preserved and open for exploration, but the adjoining folk park is what truly brings history to life. Kids can walk through thatched cottages, meet farm animals and even see a fairy trail. On one of our visits, a friendly fiddle player even played our little ones some nursery rhymes. It was such a beautiful day out and I highly recommend visiting during autumn when the castle and folk park are covered in beautiful autumn leaves.
Tip: Check their calendar for medieval banquets and storytelling events. Plan your visit to Bunratty.
2. King John’s Castle, Limerick City
Best for: Interactive learning and immersive history.
This castle is a winner for curious kids! There are touchscreen exhibits, virtual reality experiences, and areas to dress up in medieval clothes. The views from the towers over the River Shannon are stunning too.
Tip: Bring snacks and use the nearby playground at Arthur’s Quay after your visit. Plan your visit to King John's Castle.

3. Cahir Castle, Co. Tipperary
Best for: Tower climbing and dramatic battles.
One of Ireland’s largest and best-preserved castles, Cahir Castle feels authentic. Kids can wander through spiral staircases, peek through arrow slits and imagine defending the castle walls. We've been many times with our boys and they've loved every visit. Read about our visit to Cahir Castle with kids.
