Central Park in the snow

1. Central Park: A Natural Wonderland in the Heart of the City

No trip to New York is complete without a visit to Central Park. This sprawling green oasis offers countless activities to keep kids entertained. Rent a rowboat at the Loeb Boathouse, let your little ones climb and play at Heckscher Playground, or visit the Central Park Zoo to meet sea lions, penguins and red pandas. In the winter months, Wollman Rink transforms into a magical ice-skating venue that’s perfect for families.

Tip: Pack a picnic and enjoy it on the Great Lawn or Sheep Meadow to recharge between activities. Central Park is absolutely massive and kids (and parents!) will want to take a break from all the walking!

2. American Museum of Natural History: A Fascinating Adventure

Step into a world of discovery at the American Museum of Natural History. From towering dinosaur skeletons to the dazzling Hall of Gems and Minerals, this museum is an absolute delight for children and adults alike. Don’t miss the Hayden Planetarium, where kids can explore the universe through awe-inspiring space shows. We had one of the most relaxing experiences of our lives in the Planetarium, it was wonderful!

Tip: Arrive early to beat the crowds and take advantage of the kid-friendly exhibits with hands-on activities. The queues are huge before the doors even open, so make sure to get there in good time. The cafés here also have limited seating and aren't very big so pack snacks too.

3. The High Line: An Elevated Urban Escape

The High Line is an elevated park that offers a unique perspective of the city. Kids will love spotting trains below, walking through lush gardens, and exploring interactive art installations. Stop by Chelsea Market at the end of your walk for delicious treats, from freshly baked cookies to international cuisines.

Tip: Look out for seasonal family events and art workshops along the High Line.

4. Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island: A History Lesson with a View

Take a ferry ride to visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island for a great mix of history and sightseeing. The ferry ride itself is a treat for kids, offering panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline. On Liberty Island, you can explore the museum and learn about the statue’s history. Ellis Island’s interactive exhibits give families a glimpse into the immigrant experience.

Tip: Book tickets in advance to access the pedestal or crown for an unforgettable view. The crown sells out insanely fast, so make sure to book months in advance of your trip if you want to visit the crown.

Sylvanian Families display at FAO Schwartz

5. FAO Schwarz: A Toy Store Like No Other

FAO Schwarz is not just a toy store; it’s a whole experience in itself and is so worth a visit. From a giant piano you can dance on to personalised toy-building stations (I personally loved the Bunnies by the Bay and Jellycat sections), this iconic store will light up your child’s imagination. It’s a great stop for picking up a memorable souvenir from your New York adventure.

Tip: Visit early in the day to avoid crowds and have more time to explore the interactive displays. Make sure to also take a visit to Top of the Rock and St. Patrick's Cathedral which are just around the corner.

6. Brooklyn Bridge Park: Scenic Views and Fun Activities

Brooklyn Bridge Park is a waterfront haven with beautiful views of the Manhattan skyline. Kids can enjoy the playgrounds, splash pads, and the historic Jane’s Carousel. For older children, a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge is a must, offering photo-worthy moments and a sense of accomplishment.

Tip: Plan your visit around sunset for stunning photos and a magical atmosphere.

8. Times Square: Bright Lights and Big Adventures

Times Square is a sensory delight for kids, with its towering screens and bustling atmosphere. Visit the flagship stores of Disney, M&M’s World and Hershey’s Chocolate World for fun-filled shopping experiences. Don’t forget to snap a family photo with the colourful backdrop of Times Square.

Tip: Visit in the evening when the lights are at their most vibrant but be prepared for crowds.

For a day of seaside fun, head to Coney Island. Ride the iconic Cyclone roller coaster or take a spin on the Wonder Wheel. Luna Park offers rides for all ages, while the New York Aquarium provides an underwater adventure that kids will adore. End your day with a classic Nathan’s hot dog on the boardwalk.

Tip: Visit in the summer to enjoy all the seasonal attractions and events.
