Northern Ireland is a treasure trove of exciting destinations perfect for a family road trip. With a mix of beautiful landscapes, historic sites and interactive experiences, there’s something to interest everyone, young and old. This kid-friendly itinerary includes natural wonders, castles, and museums that will keep your children entertained while creating unforgettable family memories.

1. The Giant’s Causeway – A Magical Start to the Journey
Start your road trip at The Giant’s Causeway, an otherworldly landscape of hexagonal basalt columns formed by ancient volcanic activity. According to Irish folklore, these stones were created by the giant Fionn Mac Cumhaill and reached as far as Scotland. This natural wonder is the perfect spot for kids to explore and spark their imaginations. We have visited twice now and my boys loved both visits. They love seeing the waves crash against the stones as they sat above them. Be warned, it is a hill walk on the way back up, so you may want to bring a carrier or buggy for younger children.
Location: Antrim Coast, around 1.5 hours from Belfast
Tips for Families: Bring sturdy shoes for little explorers, and enjoy the family-friendly audio guide available at the Giant’s Causeway Visitor Centre to learn the science and stories behind the stones. If your kids love a good tale, the legend of Fionn Mac Cumhaill will enchant them.

2. Dunluce Castle – A Castle on the Edge
A short drive from the Giant’s Causeway brings you to Dunluce Castle, one of the most dramatic and beautiful ruins in Northern Ireland. Perched on a cliff top, this medieval castle has a fascinating, slightly spooky history and stunning views of the ocean. Kids will love imagining knights, dragons and secret treasure hidden among the ruins. Wooden shields and swords are available to purchase within the castle gift shop, for any wannabee knights. Dunluce was a really beautiful place to visit and we all enjoyed it.
Location: Near Bushmills, along the Causeway Coastal Route
Fun Fact: Part of the castle kitchen actually fell into the sea during a storm in the 1600s! Be sure to share this fun story with the kids.
Tips for Families: For safety, hold younger children’s hands as there are steep drops and rugged areas. Bring a camera to capture the stunning scenery.

3. Bushmills – A Charming Town for Family Fun
After exploring the coastline, make your way to Bushmills, a quaint village where you can slow down, soak up some local charm and grab a bite to eat. Stroll along the River Bush, enjoy the family-friendly cafes and pop into the little shops for souvenirs or treats. We stopped by The Hip Chip for dinner as we had travelled a long way from Cork to Antrim! We also walked along the river, looked at the monument in the middle of the village and got an ice-cream before returning to the car.
Location: County Antrim, near the Giant’s Causeway
Kid-Friendly Stops: Stop by for some delicious ice cream at one of the village shops or enjoy a picnic by the river. Bushmills is also close to several playgrounds and green spaces, perfect for burning off some energy after a long drive.

4. The Dark Hedges – A Natural Wonder
The Dark Hedges is one of Northern Ireland’s most enchanting and photograph-worthy sites, perfect for families seeking a magical stop on their road trip. This atmospheric avenue of beech trees, planted in the 18th century, creates a canopy of twisted branches that’s especially striking at sunrise or sunset. Known for its appearance on Game of Thrones, The Dark Hedges offers a fun, cinematic experience that both parents and kids can appreciate.
Location: Located along Bregagh Road, near the village of Armoy in County Antrim, just a 20-minute drive from Ballymoney.
Visiting tip for families: To make the most of your visit with kids, arrive early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid crowds and get the best lighting for photos. Since parking isn’t permitted directly along the tree-lined avenue, park in the nearby Hedges Estate Hotel lot and take a short, family-friendly walk to the trees

5. Titanic Hotel Belfast – Stay in Style and History
Next, head to Belfast for a unique overnight experience at the beautiful Titanic Hotel Belfast. Located in the former Harland & Wolff drawing offices where the Titanic was designed, this hotel combines luxury with history and is an exciting experience for young Titanic fans. This is a stunning hotel with history in every corner. We stayed here for two nights while we explored Northern Ireland and we had a lovely stay. Don't forget to try their delicious afternoon tea offerings. They also do a kids afternoon tea which my boys really enjoyed.
Location: Titanic Quarter, Belfast
Why Kids Will Love It: The nautical-themed rooms and Titanic memorabilia make for a fun, immersive experience for history lovers. Plus, the hotel is just steps away from our next stop, the Titanic Belfast museum!

6. Titanic Belfast – Dive into the Ship’s Story
Right across from the Titanic Hotel, Titanic Belfast is a must-visit for families. This state-of-the-art museum walks you through the Titanic’s story, from its creation to its tragic maiden voyage. The interactive exhibits and life-sized recreations make it a hit with kids and adults alike. A ticket to the last remaining White Star Line ship, the S.S. Nomadic is also available with the price of entry to Titanic Belfast, so make sure you visit that too - it's just across the road.
Location: Titanic Quarter, Belfast
Top Family Highlights: The Shipyard Ride, where kids can experience what it was like to work in a virtual shipyard and the Titanic railings at the end which make for an iconic photo opp! Plan for at least two hours to explore fully as the experience can be quite busy.

7. W5 – Science and Discovery Fun
For families with curious minds, W5 (WhoWhatWhereWhenWhy) is a discovery centre that’s packed with hands-on exhibits and activities. With over 250 interactive displays, this centre makes learning science, technology and engineering a blast. From virtual reality to robot-building, W5 is fun for all ages and is like a gigantic playground! You will spend hours here without getting board and I wish we had left more time for visiting here because we all really enjoyed it. Make sure to book tickets in advance.
Location: Odyssey Complex, Belfast
Top Kid Picks: Spacebase, a multi-level play area, and climbing DNA. Be sure to leave plenty of time here, as it’s easy to spend a whole afternoon exploring.

8. Mount Stewart – Gardens, Trails, and History
Finally, head just outside Belfast to the Mount Stewart estate, a National Trust property with enchanting gardens, lakes, and walking trails that has been voted one of the top 10 gardens in the world. The sprawling estate is ideal for a relaxing day with the family, offering scenic views and a peek into the life of an aristocratic Irish family. Make sure to also visit the house, which is decorated so beautifully and with so much character. Kids will love exploring these gardens and it's playground. There is also a café for a sweet treat.
Location: Newtownards, County Down, about 30 minutes from Belfast
Family-Friendly Highlights: The Children’s Trail will guide kids around the garden, encouraging them to spot flowers and wildlife. Mount Stewart is particularly magical in spring and summer when the gardens are in full bloom.
