Christmas Tree Cupcakes ♥

It's that time of year again, where I begin baking and crafting to my hearts content, all in practice for Christmas. I've been trawling Pinterest for some inspiration and have come across some gorgeous ideas, most of which don't seem to be too difficult either (famous last words when it comes to Pinterest of course), so I've decided to give some a go.

I stumbled upon these stunning Christmas Tree Cupcakes and decided to make them for myself. I have varied mine slightly to Preppy Kitchen's though. I used normal ice-cream cones for the Christmas trees as I already had them in my cupboard. These also allowed me to make tall and smaller trees by removing or keeping the cone base as I so wished.

I also added embellishments to my trees in the form of little white stars for the top of the trees and golden pearl balls for baubles. When I make these again I think I'll add some coloured tinsel with gel icing and some multi-coloured baubles, but for my first attempt I wanted to keep things simple.

My buttercream didn't come out as stiff as I had wanted - it was first attempt at making it and I don't have a mixer (everything by hand!), but I still think my cupcakes came out looking well for a first attempt.

I also sprinkled green and white edible glitter on the trees, as well as a good dusting of icing sugar to give the effect of snow.

For the cupcakes:
Make a standard chocolate cupcake mix - I used a Betty Crocker mix to save time (trying to fit baking in around two small children!).

For the buttercream icing:
2lbs of icing sugar + some more for dusting
2 sticks of butter
A generous amount of green food colouring - I have a gel kind which I kept adding to the mix to achieve the green I wanted.

These are such a lovely treat for Christmas and they're a real showstopper for the table too.
