A lot of people – likely yourself included – have created some really amazing memories on big trips or during those family gatherings/celebrations. But did you know that you can get some beautiful memories even from the comfort of your home, right on your deck?
Those everyday moments that will live with you forever. Snuggled on the porch with blankets and pillows, gazing at the stars, and sharing stories... Your deck can be more than just an outdoor area. It’s more of a place where memories last forever.
And it doesn't need to be anything grandiose. The simplicity in those moments is what makes them unforgettable – a good joke, a good laugh, an enticing story, or a random, clumsy moment; Anything goes!
You only need some ideas, the people who matter to you the most, and a comfy space.
Today, we’ll focus on your deck.

1. Enjoy a Technology-Free Family Dinner
Technology and devices are pretty much everywhere. And all that doomscrolling and all that dopamine filled, eyes glued to the phone habitual behaviors, they often take away beautiful moments from you.
If the night is lovely and starry, it’s the perfect chance to take a slight break from technology. Your cell phones, laptops, and tablets – leave them all inside of the house (on silent), light a few candles and place them on the table outside. You can make your favorite dinner (or order it; this way you don’t have to think about cleaning dishes once it’s all over) and enjoy a tasty meal under the stars.
It’s so simple to be present, talk about your day, and play some family games. A starry sky, delicious food, a cosy place on the deck, and the right people is what creates that perfect atmosphere.
2. Create an Outdoor Movie Night
It’s easier than it sounds. You don’t need a big TV screen or anything like that.
Take a white sheet and hang it, or use a portable screen if you have one. Don’t forget comfortable piles of pillows and blankets.
For a more pleasant atmosphere, you can add fairy lights (you can get some affordable ones online or at the local dollar store), and of course, some candles… you can’t go wrong with candles. Unless you start a fire – then they’re probably not the best. Maybe have a fire extinguisher close by, just in case. :S
Grab your favourite snacks, treats, and drinks, don’t forget the popcorn, and your real cinema experience in the backyard can begin. The whole family will surely love it.
3. Sleep Over on the Patio
What's more fun than a spontaneous sleepover outside? Yes, a sleepover outside, on the deck. Well, going to Disneyland is probably better. But still, this is a very close second.
Grab a tent if you have one and pitch it on your deck. You can grab some sleeping bags and spread them out on the floor. Put on your favorite pajamas (bonus if you have matching ones), grab some snacks, and get ready for some ghost stories.
It’s always a good idea to play card games or just lie down and enjoy looking at the stars. Young or old, your deck is the perfect spot for a little adventure.
Let the fun begin with no packing or big planning.
4. Start a Weekly ‘Outdoor Evening’
Is there something that you and your family and friends love to do? It can be anything. Drinking tea before bed? It’s the perfect thing to do outside, sip your favorite tea, and enjoy the fresh summer night breeze. You can play a board game by lantern light, listen to your favorite music, have themed snack nights (try new meals or snacks each week), and engage in gratitude talks, among many other activities.
A lot of fun activities can turn into weekly traditions. It’s that simple – pick something you and your family (and/or friends) all enjoy and make it a weekly event. Set aside one evening a week to be outside as a family. It’s so easy, and yet it’s so special to have your own night and do the things you all love.
Weekly moments like that can build stronger bonds and bring everyone closer.
5. DIY Deck Makeover
Work and memories sometimes go hand in hand and the best ones come from working on fun projects as a family.
This is a chance for everyone to show their creative side. You can refresh the furniture, paint the railings, plant some flowers, draw something, and frame it on the wall. There are so many activities and things that can breathe life into your space.
There’s no need for a huge renovation, only if you want it. For inspiration, check ideas from local deck builders and see how small changes can completely transform your outdoor space.
Of course, if you’re looking for a large project, like umm.. Building a deck? Well in that case, keep in mind that in some states you might have to be licensed and even deal with permits and things like that. So if you want to go big, what I’d do is find a deck builder near me and check with them what we can do to make the whole thing happen.
Whichever the case – DIY or pro – it’ll be worth it.
6. Backyard Game and Quiz Night
For those who like to compete (and win), this is a great way to showcase your skills in various quizzes. You can find a lot of free ones online, you can download a quiz app, or even create your own theme that suits you. It doesn’t have to be anything super complicated, you can play Pictionary, Alias, Taboo, Trivia, charades, scavenger hunt – there’s so much to choose from.
Tip: Adding a prize can make things more interesting and exciting.
For this type of activity, all you need is good energy, snacks and a comfy spot for playing late into the night.
Your deck is the perfect foundation for creating sweet memories. Those simple evenings at home are the ones that you remember the most. Enjoy the night’s air with fun activities, conversation, and laughs.
It’s really all about simple, thoughtful moments that bring everyone closer.
