Creating a Rich Learning Experience for Kids During Sea Travel

As parents, we always strive to create rich learning experiences for our kids, whether at home or on holiday. And hopping aboard a cruise is no different!

In this guide, we’ve put together some practical tips to help you foster your little one’s learning on your next sea voyage.

1. Safety First

Whether your family is cruising to the Mediterranean Sea or beyond, the most important thing we can do for our kids during new travel experiences is to make them feel safe.

One of the ways we can do this is by helping them become familiar and better understand their new environment.

Ask one of the crew members to give your family a tour of the ship you’re on. Make this a fun and interactive experience, encouraging your kids to ask all sorts of questions!

2. Immerse Your Kids Into Diverse Cultures

Instead of simply reading about different societies, history, and geography, your children can actively engage with them during your cruise.

Here are a few activities to keep your kids excited:

World map: Have a world map at the ready and track your sea route together each day. Mark off each major milestone on the journey together, and have a few tidbits prepped about the cultures and people they might find along the way.

Cultural immersion: Try to book at least one activity for each stop you make to immerse your family into different cultures. Think hands-on cooking classes, touring ancient ruins, or kid-friendly festivals.

Language games: There are plenty of interactive language games perfect for kids and parents. Who knows, someone might remember a phrase that might come in handy!

3. Learn About Marine Biology and Sea Life

The waters that surround your cruise ship will be teeming with marine life. This is a great opportunity to teach your kids about what they might find swimming beneath the boat, different habitats, and the importance of marine conservation.

Here are a few activities to help get you started:

Snorkelling: Prepare a checklist of sea life for your kids to complete. Kids love immersive and interactive activities like these and it’s sure to keep them engaged for hours.

Aquariums: Visit the local aquarium at your next port stop and teach your kids about the marine life and habitats of the area.

Environmental stewardship: Explain to your kids the impact of pollution on marine life and why sustainability is so important. Encourage them to keep the cruise ship and surrounding waters clean.

4. Nautical Navigators

Use this journey to teach your kids a new and valuable skill: astronavigation! Not only are the stars magnificent to look at, but they play a vital role in navigation. Also, being out at sea is the perfect time for stargazing.

Teach your kids about constellations, planets, and the moon's phases. This is an ideal chance to help them expand their understanding of the universe and our place in it.

Tip: Pack a few astrology books into their bag so that they can use them as references!

Create a Rich Learning Experience for Your Kids

With a little planning and a sense of adventure, your cruise can become a powerful learning tool for both you and your kids!

Pack your bags with curiosity and a few educational resources, and prepare for a journey that will benefit the whole family.
