Family holidays have a funny way of creeping up on you. One minute you’re dreaming of fresh air and a change of scenery and the next you’re adding up accommodation, food, fuel, and all the little extras that seem to multiply overnight. The good news is that a cheap family break in Ireland doesn’t have to mean cutting corners or lowering expectations. With the right destination and a bit of flexibility, it’s entirely possible to get away within Ireland, without spending a small fortune, and still come home feeling properly rested.
Ireland is full of places that quietly lend themselves to budget-friendly family trips. Towns where you can park the car and walk everywhere. Coastal spots where entertainment comes free in the form of sand, sea air and wide open space. Places where kids are welcomed warmly, not tolerated reluctantly.
These are some of the best cheap family breaks in Ireland, places that offer real value, generous experiences and that lovely sense of having escaped everyday life, even if only for a few days.

Bundoran, Co. Donegal – Old-Fashioned Seaside Fun That Still Works
Bundoran has been welcoming families for generations and that’s exactly why it works so well on a budget. Accommodation here is often more affordable than in 'trendier' coastal towns, especially if you’re happy with self-catering or family-run guesthouses.
The beach is the real star. It costs nothing, fills whole afternoons and somehow manages to tire everyone out in the best possible way. There are playgrounds, amusements and plenty of casual places to eat that don’t require advance bookings or fancy menus. Everything is close together, which means less driving and more time actually enjoying yourselves.
Don't miss a visit to Bundoran's famous fairy bridges and wishing chair to share some of that Irish folklore charm with the kids!
Bundoran is ideal if you want a simple, nostalgic seaside break where kids can just be kids and parents can relax without constantly checking the budget.

Wexford – Sunshine, Space & Great Value Accommodation
Wexford consistently offers some of the best value family breaks in Ireland, particularly outside peak summer weeks. The county has a wonderful mix of long beaches, family-friendly attractions and accommodation options that cater well to larger families.
Curracloe Beach is a huge draw. It's wide, clean and perfect for long walks or paddling days that cost nothing at all. Wexford town itself is easy to explore with kids, with parks, cafés and a relaxed pace that makes everything feel manageable. Don't miss a trip to Johnstown Castle (one of the most beautiful places we've ever visited!), Wells House and Tintern Abbey, which all make for amazing family days out in Wexford.
Self-catering accommodation is where Wexford really shines for budget-conscious families. Having space to cook a few meals at home can make an enormous difference to the overall cost of a trip, without taking away from the feeling of being on holiday. If you do want the hotel experience though, I recommend the Riverside Park Hotel in Enniscorthy which is a great hotel that has fabulous room options for families of five.

Sligo – A Brilliant Budget Choice for Active Families
Sligo is a fantastic option if your family enjoys being outdoors and doesn’t need constant paid attractions to stay entertained. The surrounding landscape does most of the work for you here, with beaches, forest walks, mountains and open space all within easy reach. Pay a visit to the famous sights of Ben Bulben, Strandhill Beach, Gleniff Horseshoe and Classiebawn Castle for some show-stopping sights!
Accommodation in Sligo is often more affordable than in neighbouring hotspots and there’s a good range of family-friendly hotels and self-catering options. Many of the best activities are free or low-cost, from coastal walks to exploring parks and playgrounds in and around the town.
Sligo suits families who are happiest pottering, exploring, and letting days unfold naturally rather than rushing from one attraction to the next.

Kilkenny – A City Break Without City Prices
Kilkenny proves that a family city break doesn’t have to be expensive to be enjoyable. The city centre is compact and walkable, which means you can stay centrally without relying on taxis or long drives.
Kilkenny Castle and its parklands offer hours of entertainment for a relatively small cost and many of the city’s highlights can be enjoyed simply by wandering. Street performers, riverside walks, and cosy cafés all add to the experience without adding much to the budget.
If you’re curious about city breaks with kids but want to keep costs under control, Kilkenny is an excellent place to start.

Waterford – Underrated, Welcoming & Very Affordable
Waterford is often overlooked in favour of more famous destinations, which is exactly why it offers such good value for families. Accommodation prices tend to be reasonable, and the city has a strong focus on family-friendly attractions.
The Waterford Greenway is a standout feature which is perfect for walking or cycling with children and free to enjoy once you’re there. You can see views from our visit to The Waterford Greenway in the video below. Museums in Waterford are engaging without being overwhelming and there’s a real sense that families are genuinely welcome rather than squeezed in. There are lots of beautiful gardens to visit in Waterford also, which make for amazing days out. Don't miss Curraghmore Estate, Lismore Castle Gardens and Mount Congreve House and Gardens for beautiful family days out.
Waterford works well for short breaks where you want variety without high costs.
How to Keep Family Breaks in Ireland Affordable
Cheap family breaks in Ireland are often less about choosing the “cheapest” place and more about travelling thoughtfully. Staying somewhere walkable reduces transport costs. Choosing destinations with beaches, parks and outdoor space cuts down on paid activities. Travelling slightly outside peak school holiday weeks can dramatically lower accommodation prices.
Self-catering, even for part of your stay, can take pressure off meal budgets, especially with younger children. And sometimes, the simplest trips, the ones without a packed itinerary, turn out to be the most enjoyable of all.
Best Time of Year for Cheap Family Breaks in Ireland
Spring and early autumn are often the sweet spots for budget-friendly family travel in Ireland. Accommodation is more affordable, attractions are quieter and the weather is usually kind enough for outdoor adventures without the intensity of peak summer crowds. Even winter breaks can offer excellent value if you choose destinations with plenty of indoor options and a cosy atmosphere.
A Gentle Reminder
A cheap family break doesn’t mean a lesser experience. Often it’s the slower mornings, the familiar foods and the freedom to wander without rushing that make trips truly memorable. Ireland is wonderfully generous in that way, offering beauty, warmth and space without always asking for a big budget in return.
