There’s something truly magical about experiencing Christmas through the eyes of a toddler. Every twinkling light, frosty morning and festive tradition feels new and exciting again when seen from their little perspective. If you’re looking for ways to make this festive season extra special, creating a Christmas bucket list for toddlers is a wonderful way to enjoy the lead-up to the big day.
I’ve put together a Christmas bucket list full of simple, joyful, and memory-making activities that are perfect for little ones. These are gentle, festive ideas that don’t require spending a fortune or travelling far — just quality time together, a sprinkle of creativity and lots of Christmas spirit.
1. Decorate the Christmas Tree Together
There’s nothing sweeter than letting little hands help hang baubles and tinsel. Give toddlers some soft, unbreakable decorations of their own so they can take part safely. They’ll feel so proud seeing their handiwork sparkle on the tree. If you're someone who needs their tree to look perfect, you could always let your toddler have their own little tree in their room or playroom that you can help decorate together instead.
2. Make a Gingerbread House
Messy? Yes. Memorable? Absolutely! Decorating a gingerbread house is such a fun sensory activity for toddlers, from sticking sweets on with icing to nibbling little pieces as they go. You can buy ready-made kits or bake your own for an afternoon of yummy festive fun.
3. Watch Christmas Lights Twinkle
Wrap up warm, bring along some hot chocolate in a flask and head out to see the Christmas lights. Whether it’s your local town’s display or simply a walk around the neighbourhood, toddlers will be in awe of the magical glow. If you don't fancy being out in the cold, a drive-by to see all the Christmas lights and decorations in your town or neighbourhood is another great idea. We've been doing this since I was a child and I now do it with my own children.
4. Write a Letter to Santa
Even if your toddler can’t write yet, they can draw pictures, stick on festive-themed stickers or help you decorate a letter to Santa. Pop it in the post or put it in the fire while it magically makes it's way to Santa, together for a special tradition that sparks their imagination.
5. Enjoy a Festive Storytime
Set aside some cosy evenings to read Christmas books together by the glow of the tree lights. Stories like The Snowman, The Polar Express or any festive picture book will capture their imagination and create lovely bedtime traditions. For added magic, why not create a book advent calendar? This is something I did when my older boys were small and I loved the tradition.
6. Bake Christmas Cookies
Toddlers love helping in the kitchen. Let them stir the mixture, roll out the dough and use festive cookie cutters to make star and tree shapes. The best part? Decorating (and tasting!) the finished treats. You could even wrap some up and let your toddler gift them to friends or family as a sweet little Christmas gesture.
7. Have a Christmas Movie Afternoon
Snuggle up under blankets and watch lovely festive films together. Short classics like The Snowman (our favourite!) or toddler-friendly animations are perfect for keeping little ones engaged while adding to the Christmas spirit. You can also find very sweet, classic Christmas short cartoons on YouTube. Our favourite is Santa's Workshop, a Disney animation from 1932. I watched it myself as a child and it brings back so many lovely Christmas memories.
8. Build a Snowman (or an Indoor One!)
If you’re lucky enough to get snow, building a snowman is an absolute must. If not, create your own indoors with cotton wool, cardboard, or even stacking white cushions — toddlers will love the creativity of your indoor winter wonderland.
9. Create Homemade Christmas Cards
Get crafty with paper, glue, stickers and toddler-sized handprints to make sweet Christmas cards for grandparents and friends. It’s a lovely keepsake and a fun way for your toddler to be part of the gift-giving.
10. Have a Festive Pyjama Day
There’s something so cosy about staying in Christmas PJs all day long. Pop on some festive music, sip hot chocolate together and let your toddler enjoy the slower pace of the season while you enjoy some quality time together.
