14 Fun and Creative Ways To Decorate With Lights Around Your Home

Autumn is here and it's the perfect time of year of cosying up your decor with some new soft furnishings and some ambient lighting.

Decorating with indoor lights can add a touch of magic to your home and lighting can really help to create a cosy atmosphere around the home, especially on the darker and colder evenings.

Here are some fun and creative ways to decorate with lights around your home:

Twinkling Bed Canopy: Hang sheer curtains or a fabric canopy from the ceiling above your bed and string fairy lights to create a dreamy and romantic bed canopy. Canopies can be purchased quite cheaply from the likes of Amazon and are easy to secure to the ceiling. There are lots of fairy light options available quite cheaply too, meaning this DIY project won't cost the world, but will look absolutely beautiful!

Mason Jar Lanterns: Fill mason jars with string lights and place them on shelves, tables, or hang them outdoors for a charming rustic ambiance.

Lighted Wreath: If you're a flower lover, why not get a faux flower wreath and adorn it with micro fairy lights? This creates a beautiful wall feature.

Lighted Wall Art: Arrange string lights in the shape of your favorite symbols, words, or patterns on an empty wall to create illuminated wall art. Neon lights are also a great option for lighted wall art. Lights4Fun has a fun range of neon wall lights, one of which we have in our playroom. It's a fun take on traditional lighting and really adds to the playful atmosphere in there.

Starry Night Ceiling: A fun and creative way of imitating the night sky in a child's bedroom or nursery is by sticking glow-in-the-dark star stickers on their bedroom ceiling and adding small string lights to mimic a starry night sky. This can be done quite cheaply but the effect it gives is so whimsical!

Light-Up Headboard: Create a unique headboard by outlining the shape with string lights, giving your bedroom a cosy and whimsical vibe.

Fairy Light Photo Display: Use mini clothespins to attach photos or polaroid pictures to a string of fairy lights, turning memories into an illuminated wall display. This is a lovely way of displaying pictures and also a great decorative idea for birthday parties too.

Luminous Centerpieces: Ig you want to add some lighting to your living room or hallway, an easy and decorative way is by placing string lights in glass vases or bowls along with decorative items like beads or flowers to create eye-catching table centerpieces.

Bottle Illumination: Repurpose empty wine or liquor bottles by inserting LED lights inside and using them as decorative pieces on shelves or tables.

Glowing Walkway: Line your garden path or walkway with solar-powered LED lights to guide visitors and create a magical entrance.

Festive Fireplace: Fill your fireplace with fairy lights or LED candles during warmer months for a cosy, fire-free, year-round display.

Patio Umbrella Elegance: If you're someone who uses your outdoor space a lot in the evening for entertaining or relaxing and want a creative way to decorate with lights, why not attach string lights to the underside of your outdoor patio umbrella? This will create a cosy and inviting space for night time gatherings.

Lantern Walkway: Hang lanterns with battery-operated candles from tree branches or hooks to line your garden pathway.

Glowing Planters: Place LED light strips or rope lights inside large planters to illuminate your outdoor plants and create a stunning focal point.

Remember, the key is to let your creativity run wild and personalise these ideas to suit your style and your home. Whether you're going for a cosy and intimate atmosphere or a vibrant and lively space, using lights as part of your décor can add a magical and relaxing atmosphere to your home.
