Why Vitamin D Supplements Are Important For Children

As parents, we try to do all we can to make sure our children are getting all the health and well-being that we can possibly give them.

Our children get the majority of their vitamin and mineral needs from the foods we give them each day. However, there are some vitamins and minerals which need to be supplemented in our children's diet due to different factors involved.

One such vitamin is Vitamin D, as this is a vitamin which is not naturally rich in a lot of foods. Only a small number of foods such as eggs yolks, oily fish (salmon, herring, etc.), red meat and liver contain Vitamin D. In fact, fortified foods such as milk, yogurt, orange juice and cereals are the best way to get Vitamin D into your child via food, but a supplement will have to be given to get the daily recommended dose of Vitamin D for your child.

Vitamin D is an essential vitamin for kids. It is essential for healthy bones and teeth, building strong immune systems and for preventing rickets - all things are especially important to look after in growing children.

When it comes to growing healthy and strong bones Calcium may be the first thing that comes into your mind for your child's diet. While Calcium is also important for children, did you know that the body can only absorb the bone-strengthening mineral when there's Vitamin D present? This is why so many 'super milks' these days have added vitamins, including Vitamin D.

Building a strong immune system is so important for nursery and school-going children - I think as parents we all know the amount of germs and sicknesses that our children begin picking up once they reach nursery and school-going age! To keep all these nasty bugs at bay, it's important to help our children's immune systems in any way we can. Boost your child's immunity with Baba West's Back to School Immunity Pack.

This handy Back to School Immunity Pack has been designed to help support children's immune systems when they need it most. This pack contains everything needed to help keep bugs at bay - whether it's for a child going to nursery or school, going on holiday or just needing some extra support during cold and flu season. It can be used for children aged 3+ and all the supplements included are sugar-free with no artificial colours, flavourings or additives.

Vitamin D supplement is especially important if you live in a cold weather country such as Ireland and the U.K. as we don't get as much natural Vitamin D from sunlight compared to warmer climates.

A study by Trinity College Dublin found that 1 in 4 Irish children are deficient in Vitamin D. So, it's incredibly important to give your children a Vitamin D supplement, especially during the long winter months. It's recommend by the HSE to begin taking a Vitamin D supplement from October to March each year, to get the recommended daily dose. During the later spring and summer months, we should be able to get enough Vitamin D from sunlight.

Do you use a Vitamin D supplement with your children?
