Your Ultimate Guide to the Top Restaurants in Hobart

You have probably heard the saying, “the shrimp is on the barbie.” That just goes to show you how much Australians and Tasmanians love BBQ. And with Hobart being on the edge of the island, seafood is a popular food as well. Some of the most popular dishes besides BBQ include wallaby, scallop pies, and lamb.

It’s not just a meat-lovers city though. Hobart has some excellent black truffles, wasabi cheese, macadamia nuts, and their own special honey you can only find in Tasmania called Leatherwood. But don’t bring your luggage or shopping bags with you when you head out to dine. Drop them off at one of Hobart’s suitcase storage facilities

Fine Dining Establishments:

Urban Greek
Choose from one of four banquets at Urban Greek including the Minotaur with lamb and chicken, Hippocrates with prawns and octopus, Aristotle with roasted lamb and seafood croquettes, and the Poseidon seafood banquet with whatever is fresh at the time. They also have entrees like Tasmanian lamb or salmon.

Aloft Restaurant
You will feel like royalty when you dine at Aloft, which is on the top floor of Brooke Street Pier. Get a window seat for amazing harbor views while you dine on the decadent delights from the chef’s menu. A typical menu includes oysters, scallops, sashimi, crispy eggplant, tartare, fish of the day, and pork with greens.

Me Wah
If you like Chinese cuisine, Me Wah is a delightful and charming restaurant with elegant simplicity. The banquet features over a dozen items like Szechuan duck, Angus beef, and Hokkien noodles. Or try the Peking duck, Szechuan pork dumplings, prawn spring rolls, sashimi, or Tasmanian tiger abalone.

Local Cuisine :

Peacock and Jones
For some real Aussie food in a stylish eatery, Peacock and Jones is the place to go. Some of the main courses include market fish, confit duck, Berkshire pork chops, Lyndall Farm lamb, and Black Opal wagyu rump. Salad with truffles or fried aioli are both great sides. And you can get ice cream or soft chocolate for dessert.

Fico
Fico boasts two tasting menus as well as a small a la carte menu for bar seating. Local produce in season has the menu changing frequently but they will serve you a luscious six- or eight-course meal. Some of the examples include kingfish, cured quail egg, oyster Choy, mussels, pigeon, and gelato.

Landscape:

Whether you want Angus, wagyu, rib-eye off the grill, or freshly shucked oysters from the bay, they have the season’s best at Landscape. Their lamb rump and potato gnocchi are divine, but the duck fat chips are legendary. You will enjoy being surrounded by landscape paintings from John Glover as well.

Dinner on the Go:

Flippers Cooked & Fresh Seafood
If you like seafood of any kind, Flippers is the place to go. On Constitution Dock’s waterfront, this is the freshest fish and chips you will get in Hobart. Try the Box of Treats with scallops, crabsticks, prawns, cutlets, calamari, and fish cocktails featuring trevalla, blue grenadier, flake, salmon, and flathead.

Parklane Espresso
It may sound like a coffee shop, but you have to try their food too! The ham toasties are heavenly and the smoked chicken with pesto, spinach, and cheese is remarkable. The berry smoothie bowl is topped with banana, coconut, and granola for a sweet and crunchy delight. And the croissants are flaky and tender.

Irish Murphy’s
Irish Murphy’s uses local produce to prepare all of their meals, so you know you are going to get fresh food whatever you order. The Guinness pie is fabulous, the chicken parmy is perfectly cooked, and the fish stew is always amazing no matter what is in season. Also, the stained-glass windows are stunning.

 The Texas Pantry

The Texas Pantry boasts some of the best BBQ in the city. From ribs to burgers, the menu is mouthwatering. Try their chicken wings made with free-range chickens and the waffle fry nachos with queso cheese and salsa. And Mickey’s Cubano Baguette is a delight with pulled pork, ham, cheddar, and pickles.

Burger Got Soul
For a burger with soul, try Burger Got Soul. The Soul Burger is a Tassie grass-fed beef burger with all the fixins. But if you want something different, try the Shepherds Delight with lamb or the Fair Game with venison, boysenberry, and brie. Or try the Funky Chicken with smoked bacon and avocado.

Billy’s Burgers
With 10 kinds of burgers, you are sure to find a favorite at Billy’s Burgers. The cheesy shroom has shredded hoisin mushrooms, fried jalapeno jack cheese poppers, aioli, and slaw all on a burger. And the Jamaican Jerk chicken skewers are famous. Try the chocolate salted malted popcorn sundae for dessert.

Sweet Spots:

Honey Badger Dessert Café
With names like Happy Tummy and Love Stack, you know Honey Badger will be good. For example, the chocolate chip panookie is a cookie with marshmallow, peanut butter caramel, and chocolate ice cream, and the Forbidden Cheesecake has mascarpone, strawberries, hazelnut toffee brittle, and caramel pearls.

 Waffle On

If you like waffles, this is the place to go. They have 17 flavors from savory to sweet. The sweets include the traditional Brussels waffle with syrup, ice cream, and Chantilly cream. Or you can try the apple & ginger crumble with caramel sauce, the lemon meringue with raspberry, or bacon & banana.

Van Diemen's Land Creamery
The pepper berry & leatherwood honey ice cream at Van Diemen's Land Creamery is magnificent. And the Hokey Pokey with honeycomb balls is extraordinary. Other awesome flavors include ginger, lavender & white chocolate, caramelized fig, and blood orange. And it’s right on the waterfront with incredible views.

While you are in Hobart, be sure to visit some of the attractions. The Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) is full of history and tucked in the sandstone cliffs. Or climb Mount Wellington, which takes you about 4,200 feet above the city. Boat tours are also popular, and the botanical garden is a great place for some selfies.
