London is a city famous for its vibrant economy, incredible cultural
scene, and world-class hotels. But London is a big place, and there’s
probably plenty of things that you never knew you could do there.
Here are some unusual things to see and do in London, with the kids or without - some of which you've probably never even known about until now!
Go For A Swim in Hyde Park
Did you know you could go for a swim in Hyde Park? It’s probably not
something you've ever considered. But if you’re a member of the
Serpentine Swimming Club, it’s something you can enjoy every week
throughout the year. The club meets early on a Saturday morning for an 8
am dip in the park’s lake. Goosebumps all around.
Go Caving
The thought of going caving under the streets of London seems
preposterous. But it turns out that there are caves in London and not
just those created by the new Crossrail. The Chislehurst Caves are a
group of man-made caves that lie underneath the site of the current
city. They’re not made in recent times, but ancient times by druids,
Romans, and Saxons. The caves create a labyrinth of tunnels darting in
all direction - perfect for a fun day out with the family, so long as
you’re not claustrophobic.
Listen To A Concert At Lunchtime
London shows are famed all over the world. But is there such a thing as
a free lunch? Can you really listen to a concert in London and not have
to pay a penny? If you go to St. Martin-in-the-Fields Church near
Trafalgar Square at 1 pm on weekdays, you can listen to live music
performed for free from a range of artists and genres. Not bad, eh?
Visit The Lamp Powered By Farts
Most parents have to deal
with toilet humor from their children at some point - I have a six year old boy and it's all I ever hear! But gaseous
emissions of the bathroom variety were once a serious business in the
capital, powering street lamps. The lamps work by taking farts from
sewer and then using their chemical energy to produce light. It’s an
ingenious idea, but sadly the era of fart-powered lamps has come to an
end.
Or has it? It turns out that there is still one
fart-powered lamp in operation and you can go and view it, so long as
you can bear the smell. The last fart-lamp is located near the Savoy
Hotel. Go and check it out.
Go And View The Wellcome Collections
If you want to see a bunch of weird and wonderful objects from history,
including mummified bodies, then the Wellcome Collections are the place
to take the whole family. The museum features unusual objects, like
Charles Darwin’s skull-topped walking cane.
Go To An Ancient Operating Theatre
The Old Operating Theatre Museum on St Thomas Street is, fortunately,
closed for business. But if you ever wanted to go back in time and see
what operations were like in the good old days, without anesthetics,
then it’s worth a look. The museum retains the original operating table
and equipment, so it's not for the squeamish.

Are there any other unusual things that you would recommend seeing and doing in London?
