Things That Make Us Feel Better When We're Sick ♥

Our house has been overcome by sickness as of late with Jacek becoming sick first with a bought of man flu and then myself catching the flu which has now turned into a chest infection - the joys of the winter season for sure. I thought it would be good to share some things that make us both feel better when we're sick as I know there a lot of people out there who are suffering with colds and flu at the moment.

Jacek seems to be overcoming his flu now and aren't I glad! I honestly don't think I could cope anymore with the wheezing sounds when bed time came and the continuous sound of him blowing his nose loudly and the over exaggerated cough - he probably feels just the same about me too at this stage! I learnt recently from Benenden that man flu is surprisingly an actual real thing, with scientists discovering that men have weaker immune systems which leaves them susceptible to harsher boughts of cold, flu and respiratory issues... so I really can't really be too hard on Jacek for all his moaning and growing of how ill he was. I know women can get really irritated with men when they're suffering from man flu as most of us just try and get on with all we have to do as well as dealing with being sick but I can really sympathise with him now that I'm the one suffering from the flu and a chest infection, although he seems to cough just after I do... are we competing for who can be dramatically ill the best I wonder?

Whilst being sick there are a few things that made both him and I feel a lot better.

A nice, warm bath is on the top of the list. Both of us received a lot of LUSH goodies for Christmas and I don't think we've ever had as many baths in our lives as both of us have had this month. There's nothing better than a nice, warm, relaxing bath with a LUSH bathbomb, especially when you're suffering from the flu, feeling achy and have the chills. Jacek's favourite was Dragon's Egg, mine was Twilight which I've reviewed here.

A nice cup of tea. I don't drink hot drinks but Jacek has been living on tea ever since he became ill. His go to tea is Rooibus tea which is from South Africa so of course he has to love it for that reason alone. He said a nice, hot cup of tea really does make you feel better when you're feeling awful.

Fleece pyjamas. Being so sick I have been living in my pyjamas and having a lovely warm and super soft pair is just the bees knees for the cold nights and days when you're suffering from flu.

Candles and essential oils. We both love burning candles anyway but whilst we've been sick it's actually been really calming to have candles burning in the bedroom and essentials oils around the house to keep the place smelling lovely and soothe our sinuses.

Tissues with aloe vera. Tissues top the list of cold and flu essentials but ones with aloe vera are much kinder on the nose, making sure that those dreaded sore, red noses don't happen - not a good look.

Vicks Vapour Rub. This product has been an absolute life saver for us whilst we've been sick and although it hasn't made me feel better as I now have a chest infection it really helped Jacek overcome his man flu. It's so soothing when rubbed on the chest and back, especially before bed. We also put some in our baths and under our noses to help us breathe.

Takeaway food. The two of us just having had the energy or appetite to cook so when the two of us were feeling hungry we opted for a takeaway. Having a takeaway isn't a regular thing for us, it's more of a treat so having it whilst we were feeling awful did help to cheer us up.

Lots of TV and films. I don't watch a lot of TV as I prefer being on the internet but there's nothing I like more than lying on the couch under a blanket watching TV or a good film while I'm sick. Jacek loves watching films almost daily so he's been watching a lot of new films to get him through his evenings on the couch.

Sitting by the fire. We don't have our fire on much as it's gas and wastes a lot of money but being so sick and with the unbelievably cold weather and snow outside turning on the fire and sitting there to warm up has been an essential. I loved doing this, especially when I was suffering from chills and my high tog duvet couldn't even keep me warm.

Chocolate. I don't think I even need to explain why this made us feel better. Chocolate makes everything better.

Fresh air. Getting outdoors and breathing in some fresh air can really do you the world of good when you're sick and I know it's made Jacek and I feel better. I've taken Tyler Lee to the beach twice whilst I've been sick and I can't tell you how good it was to sit there in the sun, breathing in the fresh air and listening to the sound of the waves lull on the shore.

Moisturiser and lip scrubs. Moisturising the skin can really help ease those muscle aches that cold and flu brings. Jacek and I have been using our The Body Shop body butters and not only do they smell great but they've left our skin feeling soft and left us feeling more like ourselves again. Lip scrubs were another thing we both needed as our lips were left so dry after being sick. My favourite ones were LUSH's Santa's Lip Scrub and Bubblegum, the smell of both made me fell better for awhile at least.

So there you have it, a list of things which have made both myself and my better half feel better during our boughts of flu and a chest infection - although I am still very sick and not seeing any end to it. It's great having some things on hand to comfort you when you feel absolutely awful and whilst all things things are quite simple they really have helped us both over the last few weeks. It's amazing what can help you feel a little bit better at least.

What makes you better when you're ill? Can you believe that man flu is a real thing?!

  1. When I was a kid, my mother always made me tea with honey when I was sick. I am not sure if it helped speed up my recovery at all, but to this day, whenever I am sick, I make myself tea with honey!

  2. A lot of the things you mentioned help me when I'm sick. I get sick often, so it really does suck. Taking a nice relaxing bath is one of my favorites to do when I'm sick. It helps to relax me. Some nice warm and comfy pajamas and a great book or movie is great as well.

    1. It REALLY sucks. I've been sick for over three weeks now and I can't see an end. I wish I had the energy to read, I fancy getting into a good book before the month ends.

  3. I'm not into fleece, but I understand the concept. When I feel like garbage, I like to dress head to toe in flannel. It just makes me feel better.

  5. I rarely get sick. If I do I normally drink a lot of tea, have nasal spray beside me and a lot of tissues. Vicks is brilliant but I use it more on Matthew than I would on me.
Depending on the cold I would take paracetamol.
