Baking & Cupcake Decorating With Dr. Oetker ♥

*We were sent some Dr. Oetker products to try out, however, as always, all thoughts and opinions expressed are 100% my own.

This morning Tyler and I did some baking and made some delicious, pretty cupcakes - all of which are almost gone now as Tyler couldn't get enough and we gave some as a little gift to my grandparents too. There's nothing sweeter (excuse the pun) than being able to give someone a homemade gift and cupcakes always seem to be our homemade gift of choice.

I'm going to be completely honest here, these weren't made from scratch. I have a over-enthusiastic four year old and a teething one year old, so making things from scratch just doesn't happen, but these cupcakes were made with love and overall, that's what really counts, isn't it?

I used a pre-made cake mix, added the eggs, vegetable oil and water and got my little helper Tyler to mix it altogether. This little boy of mine loves helping and is always keen to help and be useful whenever he can. I separated the cake mix into two bowls and added some blue and pink food colouring, which gave us a pastel pink and minty green colour for the mixes. I then spooned these into the cupcake cases to make little marbled cupcakes and they looked really pretty even without icing on top.

Anytime I make icing it comes out all watery, so I used Dr. Oetker Easy Swirl Cupcake Icing in Pretty Pink to decorate the top of the cupcakes. This comes with four nozzles and the one I used made the cupcakes look like little carnation flowers - so pretty. This icing was on offer in Tesco and that's why I picked it up, it tasted delicious though.

My baking tin is always full of cake decorations and I already had some Dr. Oetker ones, but the lovely people at Dr. Oetker also sent me a selection of their products to decorate our bakes with too. Tyler and I used the Dr. Oetker Superhero Sprinkles to add some blue stars, sprinkles and balls to our cupcakes - the blue was really pretty against the pink icing. We also used the Dr. Oetker Bright and Bold Mix sprinkes to add some fun colours to our cupcake decorations. These colours reminded me of ice-cream toppings. I also used some of the blue Dr. Oetker Neon Writing Gel to decorate a cupcake or two - I probably could have been a whole lot more creative with this as I spotted this Alice in Wonderland cake afterwards and was blown away by how amazing it was!

I also had some Dr. Oetker Wafer Daisies and Dr. Oekter Chocolate Hearts in my baking tin so I also used them to decorate some of the cupcakes - I need to try and use them up, more baking is in order I think! Tyler helped by eating some of the chocolate hearts, that boy has a sweet tooth for sure.

I loved how our cupcakes turned out, I think they were really pretty and I loved the mix of colours and different things we used to decorate them. They're nearly all gone now too so I think that's a good sign of how tasty they were too.

It was so lovely baking with my eldest boy. I must make an effort to include him more in the kitchen. I'd love to be able to teach him how to bake some more things - hopefully from scratch in time and show him how to cook too. It's such an important life skill and I think it's best to start teaching him from a young age. Plus, it's lovely to get some one on one time with him, we haven't had a lot of it since his baby brother came along.

  3. Oh my gosh these are so pretty! I'm awful when it comes to baking... but cupcakes are one of my favourite cakes to eat so I kind of wish I wasn't so useless at it. I love the way you decorated them!
